Wrecking Crew bass player Carol Kaye homage in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was impressive.

One of the delights in the third seasion of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is the character "Carol" played by Liza Weil that is clearly based on legendary Wrecking Crew bass player Carol Kaye. In the show her dress, glasses, talk and bass playing in Shy Baldwin's band leave no doubt, it's supposed to be her. I LOVE HER SCENES. That is all.

On the other hand, Carol isn't thrilled about it. This is what she wrote me:

"My life is not a joke, I warned them not do do this to me, but they don't care what they put in a film...slander, and clown stuff, BAD PEOPLE, FAKE FILM Denigrating ALL Women and Degrading ALL Top Professional Union Studio Musicians. It's CRAP!"

    So there ya go.

Interesting to note that Liza is playing left handed until the last Apollo show.

Who doesn't love Carol Kaye. One of the all time greats...of either gender.

I don't get what she's upset about. I didn't find anything degrading about the way the character is written or with the actor's portrayal.

Based on my thankfully limited experience with her, yeah, that sounds like Carol. I have a sister like this, and I don't deal with her anymore, either. Life is too short for garbage like that.

Spoiler alert! ;);) I'm looking forward to this show returning and it's interesting to hear she is in this season.

Carol was similarly upset with Love & Mercy, The Wrecking Crew doc, the Wrecking Crew book...

She's great and certainly entitled to her opinion of course...

I didn't either. I thought it was rather wonderful.

She would probably be less upset if she was compensated what she thought she should get.

I liked it, too... and similarly, I don't know what Ms. Kaye is upset about.

Now, the guy who was standing in for Hef in "Miami After Dark"... **he** was a bit of a stiff.

So was Hef, I thought he copied that stiffness perfectly. (Stiffness, heh.)

She can also be a very nice person. When I was learning to play the bass, about 25 years ago, she was extremely generous with her time and advice to me, a complete stranger on the internet. At the same time she was also claiming credit for sessions that she didn't play, yadda yadda yadda. Long story short, people are complicated and let's not turn this into a Carol-bashing thread please.

Agreed. I had similar experiences with her. People are complicated and it's hard to understand their actions sometimes.

Let's keep this discussion on-topic, as regards the content of the show.

I understand others have had various interactions with Ms. Kaye, but those should be the subject of another thread.

    Thanks, everyone... carry on!
