Great find; I dig this! Reminds me of something I've heard before, but I can't put my finger on it. Translation: "1988 On A Night Like This" - The Stars. A Bob Dylan song title.

    “1988” — Dave McMurray

In the Detroit tradition of jazz musicians who venture in many directions (think of Motown's house band, the Funk Brothers), Dave McMurray honed his chops on the road with Albert King, and in the studio as a session player. He played with Was (Not Was), and then on several Don Was-produced albums such as the Stones' Voodoo Lounge, Iggy Pop's Brick By Brick, and Bob Dylan's Under The Red Sky.

    Are we ready for 1989?

Saint Etienne - "Girl VII": "June 4th, 1989… Primrose Hill, Staten Island, Chalk Farm, Massif Central…"

    “4 June 1989” — Mary Chapin Carpenter

Here's another song that references the very same date. Although the Saint Etienne song above mentions June 4th 1989 explicitly, the lyrics (and the song) are just a beautiful mystery. Carpenter's song is a profile of a 17-year old soldier in Beijing during the Tiananmen Square massacre.

'1989' by Negrita. For those who speak Italian. Or just enjoy some catchy pop/rock. Or who are fans of Regents Canal.

And, returning to English language not just English locations. Here is 'This Island' by Wheatus. Wheatus being another band I know by name but didn't know their music well. More lo-fi-ish than I expected.

    Lyrics include:

    Right through
But you already knew that was true
Since you tried it the first time, in 1989
When you were the one in my shoes

    “Pop Song 89” — R.E.M.

Caution: NSFW... Don't remember if this video made it past the MTV censors or not back in the day. From their major label debut Green, having moved over to Warner Bros from independent I.R.S. Records.

Since this came out in November of 1988, I assume the "89" in the title to mean the year 1989. Maybe they intended this to be their big pop song for 1989, their "coming out" hit for their new label... Although it turned out that "Stand" would be that song ("Orange Crush" was my favorite on this LP).

"Remember the time 1989, When I grew up to see the sign,
    Without you, I can't breathe.
I look upon to see the stars, The Milky Way, the Moon and Mars, I miss you, by my side. "

This is an interesting song and I love the visuals. The electronica dance band is from Germany and this was their biggest hit there, reaching #12.

“Huntsville, 1989” — The Last Town Chorus

This reminds me a little of hearing the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions for the first time – slow, beautiful, atmospheric, druggy, vaguely country. The singer, songwriter, and lap steel guitarist is Megan Hickey. One of the songs from this album is a remake of David Bowie's "Modern Love" done in this style, and was used in the TV show "Grey's Anatomy."

    Deliverance- 1990

    "Memories of 1990

This is a really an interesting metal christian band. The song has a menacing vibe, great guitar and love the drums.

Here's one from XTC- The everyday Story of Smalltown

"You're too fast for little old me
    next you'll be telling me it's 1990"

    Nice job with the rhyme!
