My first experience with Ortofon 2M Black

I tried my new Ortofon 2M Black stylus for the first time tonight. I switched from the Bronze, which I loved. With the Black, details in the music, a vibrating bass string or a symbol crash, just pop out. That's good and bad. It brings out more crackles and pops. But in return I get a clearer window into my favorite recordings and a better understanding of the condition of my records.

My vinyl playlist tonight so far:
    Frank Zappa -- "Hot Rats"
    Funkadelic -- "Maggot Brain"
    Herbie Hancock -- "Head Hunters"
Jimi Hendrix -- "Band of Gympsies"
Neil Young -- "Tonight's The Night"
    Scheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov)
    The 13th Floor Elevators
Chet Baker -- Chet Baker Sings.
    Killing Joke -- Killing Joke

It will probably change a bit during the next few days, congratulations and enjoy!

I ran a 2M Black for a few years. Superb, rich and detailed sound, but on my setup, it revealed every vinyl imperfection. I liked it but would never return to it for that reason.

    A very nice cartridge indeed.
Very revealing, that’s my experience too, sometimes too revealing.
You should try playing with VTA a bit; it’s very sensitive to VTA - much more than a fineline like the Bronze. It might increase/decrease the noise.

maggot brain is a great album, is that a new pressing?

How refreshing to hear someone checking out their system with Zappa and the Elevators rather than Dire Straits or Dave Brubeck..,

I hope you didn't spin 4MenWithBeards pressing of "Maggot Brain". That would turn you off any cartridge. :)

Isn't the "brings out every detail including more pops and crackles" a characteristic of the Shibata stylus itself? My one and only experience with a Shibata, left me with the exact same impression. Sounded wonderful, but more noise for sure.

It’s an original Canadian. Pretty silent copy.

Congrats and enjoy. I’ve been running one for the last 2 years and it’s magnificent. My previous phono was Schiit Mani, it is excellent for only 129$ but I always knew that it was not enough for the Black. Recently I’ve added a new phono, Rega Aria and now I’m getting the best from my Black.

Absolutely! And frankly Scheherazade is a rather good selection as well.
  14. Love the 2M Black. It is revealing but never to a fault as I love the detail and authority it brings. I have 3,000 LP's and never have issues with excess surface noise. I think if you have a good tonearm and phono stage, surface noise should not be a distraction unless your record is just too noisy.

OP: Take a moment to fill out your profile. What arm/phono stage are you running the 2M Black on?

Agreed! I have been using the 2M Black on my TT for about 6 years and I do not have any complaints.

I have the Bronze and the Black and have also used the Exact.

The organic sound of the Black beats them all.

A good stylus is a good stylus because it does pick up detail. Being a good stylus, it picks up anything else that is present on the record.

If your records happen to be less than pristine, is it the stylus you should be blaming?

I was interested in the 2m Black as a candidate for my next upgrade but then I saw this video and now I'm not so sure.

I know that this is a subjective matter but the LP Gear sounds more open more fun and is cheaper also.......

One of the commentators makes mention that this is most likely a MOFI edition of Abbey Road and not an Apple one. Possibly not the best choice of pressing to show off the accuracy and other aspects of the two cartridges.

I don't think this is the type of record that even remotely brings out the best that the 2M Black has to offer.

While the cartridge is important, so is the rest of the system and I am not sure that the rest of the system here supports what organic sound qualities the Black is capable of.

One thing that very much surprised me about the black is its bass, which is better than I have heard from any other phono cartridge.

I love my 2M Black but I only use it occasionally with very clean records.
The sensitivity of this cartridge to record noise and other vinyl imperfections is a serious drawback IMO.
